Minor Bantam B Take Kanata A Tourney 5 Games Straight

Ceremonial puck drop by Brodie Rafter.

Ottawa Sting Minor Bantam B Team

Coach Bruce Perry's Sting Minor Bantam team won their 3 round robin games against Manitoulin Panthers, Gloucester Blackhawks and Rochester Red Wings to garner an automatic buy into the Semi Finals. Meeting up against Manitoulin for a rematch in the Semi's, Sting once again defeated them 5-3 to move on to the finals.

A ceremonial puck drop was held before the final game by Brodie Rafter, a member of the Kanata Rangers B team who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in late November. Bell Sensplex donated all funds from the weekend tournament to Brodie's family in his fight against Cancer.

The Championship game saw the Sting face off against cross town rivals the Gloucester Blackhawks. A hard fought game saw the Sting come home with the trophy after a 2-1 win and Sting MVP went hands down to Sting Goalie Shaan Martin.

Team Champions are Alex Baker, Luca Campagna, Michaela Dow, David Eiblmeier, Aidan Faught, Julian Grego, Jacob Guibord, Nick Knighton, Rheal Marleau, Shaan Martin, Phil Mederios, Alex Nesrallah, Daniel Roberts, Nick Rupar, Ricky Saab, Corey Walker, Jared Wright and Callum Macleay.

The Power of Perseverance

Ottawa Sting Major Peewee A took their skilled-game to the Championship of the Kanata Blazers AA Tournament (22-24 Jan. 2010), then on to double-OT and further on to a shootout versus Massena, NY Seaway Icebreakers AA. With the score 3-3, and having reached this final game as a result of winning by shootout in the semi-final match-up with the Mississauga Jets AA, the team had persevered and were on top of their game. As luck would have it, the final was lost in shootout but the real story is one of perseverance.

Ottawa Sting “A” had squeaked through to the playoff round after completing the round-robin with a 1-2 record, advancing only due to the tiebreaker formula (GF divided by GF+GA). In the first 2 games of the tournament, Ottawa Sting had lost by identical scores of 2-0 to both Seaway Icebreakers AA and Mississauga Jets AA (who they would later face in the semi-final and final games). If a 0-2 record isn't disheartening enough, a tiebreaker of 0.000 might be enough to take the wind out of even the toughest of players - but not this Ottawa Sting Major Peewee A team.
In the final game of the round-robin, the Sting had established a commanding 2-0 lead in the dying moments of the game. However, a 2-0 win would not have been enough to advance beyond other teams with similar records in the round-robin. The team would need 3 goals in order to advance ahead of the Cumberland Jr Grads. Ottawa Sting pulled their goalie with 0:00:30 remaining, with a 2-0 lead on the North Bay Jr Blades AA! The extra attacker paid off and the team's 3rd goal with a dozen seconds remaining propelled them on to the playoff round.

However, playing with this level of intensity had taken a toll on the team. The kids had given their all in the tournament, as evidenced by their extensive injury list:

* 2 concussions - both players expected to miss 2-3 weeks.
* Broken finger on a blocked shot.
* Puck in the jaw on a blocked clearing attempt.
* Bruised inner thigh on a blocked slap-shot.
* Usual bruises and bumps of playing contact hockey with the best.

In the semi-final game, Ottawa Sting Major Peewee tied the game 1-1 on a 3rd period goal forcing OT. 4-on-4 solved nothing and the game went to double-OT 3-on-3. Once again OT solved nothing and the game went to shootout.
The power of perseverance once again showing its strength: Ottawa had been outshot
30-10 in the game - including OT. If there were to be a game to win thanks to perseverance, this would be it. In a huddle with coaching staff, the players chose their shooters and shooting order. 3 of 4 Sting shooters went on to score. Just one score by the opponents sealed the victory. Truly a team effort. Truly a triumph of perseverance.

In the Championship game, a seesaw battle would ensue. The Ottawa Sting fell behind by 2 goals in the first period, but with just 5 seconds remaining in the period, an Ottawa Sting powerplay goal would cut the lead to 1. The only goal of the second period would again be by the Ottawa Sting, and again, on the powerplay. 2-2 after 2. Ottawa Sting would then take the lead early in the 3rd - yes, again - on the powerplay. Seaway would roar back and tie it up to send the game to OT - again. 4-on-4 solved nothing - again. Then on to 3-on-3 – again - solving nothing. Finally, shootout. The Ottawa Sting had been outshot 40-14 in the 5 periods of play. Another opportunity for perseverance to win out? Players and coaches agreed to "ride the horse that got them there" and went with the same shooters and shooting order. As quickly as it started, it was over - but for the celebrations of the Seaway Icebreakers AA. Congratulations to Seaway for winning the Kanata Blazers AA tournament.

Had I mentioned that this was a story of perseverance?

Congratulations to the Ottawa Sting Major Peewee A team on being
Finalists in the Kanata Blazers AA Tournament.

Ottawa Sting Major Atom B at the Bell Capital Cup.

Ottawa Sting goalie Jeremy Rodden defends his net during a Bell Capital Cup game against the Gananoque Islanders on Dec. 30 at the Nepean Sportsplex. The Sting Major Atom B team defeated the Islanders 6-1.

Our Sting team went undefeated in the round–robin but “ran out of legs” in the quarter-final against the Gloucester Orleans team. In the Skills Competition, the Major Atom B team won the Power Play, the Two-on-One, and the Relay Race challenges. Goalies Jeremy Rodden and Richard St-Jean both won Game MVP trophies.

Congratulations Major Atom B on a fun and exciting tournament!

Ottawa Sting Minor Atom B presented with the Bill Patterson Trophy
by the Bell Capital Cup Tournament Organizing Committee!

Note from Team Manager, Mark Byron...

Hello Everyone,

It is with a great deal of pride that I inform you that our team has been awarded the Bill Patterson Trophy by the Bell Capital Cup Tournament Organizing Committe. The prize is given to the team (one house league team and one competitive team) that best demonstrates fair play and sportsmanship during round robin play. In part, we were chosen because our team did not have any penalties called against us.

The trophy is named after Bill Patterson, a CTV Ottawa sportscaster, who died suddenly in 1999. He loved watching and reporting on young athletes and was an ardent supporter and fan of amateur sports.

Congratulations Killer B's!!!

As part of the award, each player will receive a set of Under Armour underwear. As well, one player on the team will spend one week at the Bell Sensplex Ottawa Senators Hockey School held during July and August. The coaches will determine how we select a player to receive this prize.

On behalf of all the parents, I would especially like to congratulate the coaches for this honour. They constantly teach the players and remind them to respect their opponents, referees, teamates and coaches. On several occasions I have seen them pull players aside and speak with them individually if they have exhibited any actions which could be considered unsportsmanlike. And I don't think it is just luck that in most games we have played we have been the least penalized team.

Way to go everyone!!!

Ottawa Sting Minor PeeWee B have a winning experience in Almont - on and off the ice !

”December 2009 - The Ottawa Sting Minor Peewee B team won the C Championship at the
Mississippi Thunder Kings tournament in Almonte, Ontario!  The exciting final game went to double overtime before the Sting could clinch the victory with a breakaway goal.  The Sting Players of the Game were #17 Kyle Reynolds, #10 Derek Van Bergen-Sciuk and and #9 Michael Koutsomitopoulos and two
of our players #20 David Hamilton and #14 Jaden Fruck scored their first goals of the season.

It was a great, well organized tournament and the Olympic flame passing just in front of the arena was an exciting addition to a terrific tournament experience.  All of the Sting players had an up close and personal view of the flame and most had the opportunity to hold the torch.  Congratulations to all!”

Ottawa Sting Major Bantam AA Win in Kingston!

Major Bantam AA

Fern's boys keep bringing home the gold! In early December the team travelled to Kingston for their fourth tournament of the season and brought home their 3rd gold championship win. It was a small draw with only four teams in their division, and only 10 min periods to get the job done. The Sting faced off against the local Kingston Canadians in the final on Sunday afternoon. The boys put forth another solid performance, keeping the puck out of their net and putting it into the opposing team's net to claim the tournament trophy.

Minor Midget AA Sting Take 2nd Tournament Win in Waterloo!

With a pair of dramatic overtime wins in the semi-finals and finals over top-seeded teams, the Ottawa Sting Minor Midget AA team emerged victorious at the 2009 Waterloo Memorial tournament on the weekend of November 20-22.

After winning four straight games by narrow margins in the qualifying round, the Sting faced the Brampton Battalion in the semi-final.  After falling behind to Brampton, the Sting scored a last minute goal with the goaltender on the bench for an extra skater to send the game to overtime.  A first 10-minute overtime period produced no goals due to outstanding goaltending at both ends.  Midway through the 2nd overtime period, the Sting prevailed with the winning goal after a flurry of shots on the Brampton goalie.  There was extra satisfaction in that win as it came over the Brampton team that had denied the Sting the gold medal at the Silver Seven Sensplex tournament in October.

This set up the final with OEMHL rival Gloucester Rangers who had similarly posted a 5-0 record to get to that stage. After a strong first and second period in which the Sting had built up a 2-0 lead, Gloucester came out strong in the 3rd period, scoring early before tying it up with a goal with 2 minutes left to send the game to overtime.  In the overtime, solid passing and hard work got the puck deep into the Gloucester end and back to the point for Brandon Delamorandiere's slapshot to the back of the net which sealed the deal for the Sting.

With the tournament victory and recent success in league games, the Minor Midget Sting have now moved up 40 places over last year's ranking among Ontario AA teams (myhockey.com).

Minor Bantam B Triumph in Fort Erie!

The Minor Bantam B team brought home Gold from the 31st Annual Fort Erie Fall Classic "A" Hockey Tournament, November 6-8, 2009.  The final was a 5-1 finish against Oshawa after a hard fought Semi Final win over St. Catherines 3-0.  During round robin play Sting beat home town favourite Fort Erie 3-0 and Cooksville 3-1 while tying Lorne Park 1-1.  It was a great performance by the whole team. Congrats to all the players from Coach Bruce Perry, Colin Walker and Trainer Moe Saab.

Sting Major Bantam AA strike again!

The Sting Bantam Major AA went south to Syracuse, NY for another early bird tournament. Fern, his coaching team, and players took gold again in some good solid play throughout the weekend. The Canadian dollar may have been at par with the US dollar, but the Canadian hockey was stronger and the boys collected the banner to bring back to Ottawa. It was another good chance not just for hockey but for developing team spirit and some holiday shopping to boot! Way to go team !

Sting Major Bantam AA Rock Rochester NY

MjBantamAA win in Rochester, NY
The ink had barely dried on the Major Bantam AA roster and Coach Fern D'Orazio was off to Rochester, NY with his newly formed Bantam AA team. The Sting headed south of the border to the 15th Annual Sean Shortsleeve Invitational tournament from 9-11 September. It was a good chance for players and parents alike to get to know each other as the 09/10 season gets underway. Moreover, the boys brought home the gold. In a very solid final game performance, offence, defence and goaltending all came together as the Ottawa Sting defeated the Pittsburgh Viper Stars 3-0. A great start to the season, well done Major Bantam AA.

Ottawa Sting Minor Midget AA Win in Orangeville
The Ottawa Sting Minor Midget AA team emerged victorious from their opening tournament, the Orangeville Earlybird Tournament, held on the weekend of September 18-20th.  The final and semi-final produced solid team efforts by the Sting, as they cruised to a 7-3 final win over the host Orangeville Flyers, after disposing of the TNT Tornados team by a 9-0 score in the semi-final.  These games showed strong improvement over the round robin during which the Sting dropped a 3-2 game to TNT and settled for a 0-0 tie against Orangeville.   In their other round-robin game, the Sting defeated the York Toros by a 5-1 margin.
