Welcome letter - U10B

2025-09-01 - U10 B

August 23, 2025

Good evening families,

Welcome to the 2025-2026 Ottawa Sting U10B tryouts! I am Elizabeth Wright, the U10 Liaison for the upcoming tryouts. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions throughout the U10B tryout process and kindly refrain from contacting the coach directly, as I am your point of contact throughout these tryouts.

This email is intended to provide you an overview of the process and help set expectations for the approaching tryout sessions.

Schedule:
The U10B tryouts will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 3 and the team is expected to be formed by Sunday Sept.14th.  For some of you, this may be the first time your child is trying out for a competitive hockey team. Generally, kids will get 2-3 hours before first releases. I will send communications ahead of each session.

Here is the preliminary schedule for the first three days:
  • Wednesday September 3, 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm @ Jim Durrell Complex – Peplinski
  • Saturday September 6, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm @ Ottawa U - Arena 1
  • Sunday September 7, 8:00 am - 10:00 am @ Carleton U - Rink A

It is still to be determined whether we will split these ice times into one-hour blocs.  More information will be provided in advance of the sessions.  There will likely be more tryout times added after these preliminary slots.

The full tryout schedule for U10B can also be found on the Sting website as it is updated here: Ottawa Sting Minor Hockey Association powered by GOALLINE.ca

Goalie Evaluation:
Friday, Sept. 5, 7:00pm, Richcraft Sensplex CIBC Arena
All goalies must be present for their goalie eval session. Goalies will also be evaluated during certain exhibition games.

Tryout Jerseys:
Throughout the tryouts, players will be identified by their tryout jersey number. Please ensure your player has both a white and a black Ottawa Sting tryout jersey with corresponding numbers.  Goalies only require a single jersey.
If you requested and paid for a set of Sting tryout/practice jerseys during registration, they will be available for pickup at the first tryout session.
If you did not request tryout jerseys but require them, please contact me as soon as possible with your player’s jersey size information.
It is your player’s responsibility to bring both jerseys to every session. At the first tryout session, I will check in all players and verify jersey numbers before the session begins.

Please have your player wear solid black/white socks if they have them.

In addition to verifying jersey numbers, all families will be asked to show their proof that they have registered for their HL home association. Please have this receipt ready to show electronically or print off a paper copy.

Tryout Sessions:
The tryouts will include some skills sessions, intrasquad and exhibition games.  Players will be evaluated on individual skills such as skating, stick handling, passing and shooting as well as game play, hockey IQ, character, team skills and level of compete.

This may seem like a lot but just remind your players to be engaged and give their best effort each session. During the tryouts, some players may be asked to sit for certain sessions.  Please do not read too much into who is playing when, this is just to ensure that evaluators can give your child the best opportunity to demonstrate their abilities.

Please arrive a minimum of 45 mins before the first tryout so that you can be signed in.
For every tryout session, players/goalies should be fully dressed 15 minutes prior to ice time to receive instructions.

During the tryouts, please do not approach the coach or any of the evaluators. All questions should be directed to me. And, as you can imagine, we can’t accommodate requests for times, etc.

Volunteers:
For each session we will require volunteers for hall/changeroom monitoring, opening doors (on opposite bench / door as your child), trainers and clock if the session is a game. If you are qualified (e.g. trainers) or available to help, please reach out to me so I can maintain a list of volunteers for each session.

Coach Letter:
If you have not yet had the opportunity to read the U10B coach’s letter from Graeme Lind, I would encourage you to read it.  You can find it on the Sting website here: Ottawa Sting Minor Hockey Association powered by GOALLINE.ca

Releases:
We will do our best to communicate releases as quickly as possible after a session where releases are scheduled, but it may not be possible until the following day. You will also receive a communication if your athlete is continuing in the tryout process.
Releases will be communicated via e-mail. And, because of general volume, tryout feedback can only be provided to last cuts on request, thank you for understanding.
While tryouts can be a stressful time, the process is designed to place every player at the appropriate level for their development. It is important that your player arrives well-rested and well-hydrated to perform at their best. We hope your player enjoys their tryout experience and has fun while out on the ice!

In addition, I know as parents, we want to be there to support our kids in every way, but please refrain from approaching the benches or trying to communicate with your child while they are on the ice unless you are summoned by a trainer or coach.

Please check your email regularly for future communications and tryout assignments.
Each email will also be posted under this age cohort on the Sting website in the “News” section for that cohort.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. Please note that I will be away on a family holiday from Sunday August 24 to Sunday August 31, and will reply to any questions received next week upon my return.

Looking forward to seeing you all at tryouts!
Thanks,
Elizabeth Wright
